Race Sex and Hollywood: Black Men and White Women Censored

From 1927 to 1956, the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) officially mandated that: “Miscegenation (sex relationship between the white and black races) is forbidden.”ii Although the miscegenation clause speaks directly to white-black relationships, the MPPDA also used the clause to censor scripts that portrayed interracial relationships beyond black-white pairs.
